They are used for making Gravy (Garlic, ginger, onion), tomato sauce, masala grinding, Chutney etc.
The main reason they are more popular in comparison to the traditional mixer grinder is is that their ability to process small to very large quantites for food items wet as well as dry without any trouble.
They are also able to grind turmeric (Haldi) which can be challange even for most advance and expensive mixer grinders.
